Frequently Asked Questions About Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation
What is skilled rehabilitation?
Also known as post-acute or post-hospital care, skilled rehab is designed to improve the transition back home for an elderly person who has suffered illness or injury. The resident may no longer need around-the-clock emergency or ICU services; however, they may still need care in the form of skilled nursing, nutrition management, physical therapy, discharge planning, and social services.
What is the difference between skilled nursing and inpatient rehab?
Inpatient rehab is acute care for residents who need a higher level of rehabilitation care after a traumatic surgery or injury. On the other hand, skilled nursing is sub-acute rehabilitation that is less intensive than the therapies provided at an inpatient rehab facility.
Is skilled rehabilitation covered by Medicare?
Most skilled rehabilitation stays are qualified to be covered by Medicare. Speak with your insurance provider to see if you or your loved one qualify.
How do I qualify for skilled rehab?
A doctor can determine if a senior needs skilled care. Generally, the individual must have been admitted as an inpatient for three overnights within the past 30 days. Most skilled rehab guests come directly from the hospital, but not all cases.
Is there a limit to how long I can receive skilled care?
If using Medicare as the primary payer source, then the patient is given up to 100 days as long as the stay is found medically necessary. For Medicare to continue to cover the stay, the patient should also be showing signs of improvement within that first 100 days.
